Well, not anymore. We used to put out a little zine called "๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐" but we were destined for ๐๐ ๐ซ๐๐๐ญ๐๐ซ ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฌ๐and frankly there are other people doing it better!ย
( see The Reliquary Notes from Relics of the Eternal City or Dungeon Synth Zine )
We kept the name for the collective (it's got a good ring to it [and we quietly enjoy the gaslighting]) and it has since grown into something far more mutated and terrible...
And, hear me out, but it's kind of all the magazine. Everything we do amounts to a multimedia periodical--monthly new music, semi-regular TTRPG offerings, live musical offerings, all sorts of stuff.ย
So it's a label?
Fantasy Audio Magazine is a unique cassette label and weird press based in Covington, Kentucky, dedicated to promoting underground music genres such as dungeon synth, ambient, and experimental music we refer to broadly as "cult" music. Established conceptually in 2020 and physically in 2021, the label was founded by Descender, who drew inspiration from a passion for video game soundtracks and a rejuvenated interest in tabletop role-playing games. This fusion led to the creation of a platform that bridges the gap between cult music and gaming communities.
All of our cassettes are made by us. We've recently started getting them professionally dubbed, but everything--the j-cards, the labeling, all of it is printed and cut and scored and assembled by a real human being here in our workshop. We love the big duplication companies, but we love keeping it DIY even more.ย
In addition to music releases, Fantasy Audio Magazine publishes a fan-funded zine titled "๐ฎ๐ฌ๐น๐ฏ๐ท๐ฐ," which features old-school RPG adventures, interviews, artwork, and more--including a full-length soundtrack. The label emphasizes the importance of atmospheric music in enhancing the gaming experience, and the spirit of "CANDLE" is to shine a light on exactly that intersection of worlds.
The label has an active presence in the local music scene, organizing events such as the "Ohio Valley Dungeon Synth" showcase, which features regional fantasy/DS artists like Haudh, Ten of Swords, Hedge Wizard, Magic Mishap, Mons, Lamerak, and a slew of others, including a rotating door of traveling and international artists!
For those interested in supporting the label and its artists, Fantasy Audio Magazine offers a subscription service known as "The Guild." Subscribers receive full access to all releases, monthly new music, a 25% discount on physical merchandise, and an official membership card upon request. A portion of the subscription fees is donated to carbon removal technologies, reflecting the label's commitment to environmental sustainability.
Hi! Hey. It's me--I run FAM. I was anonymous for the longest time but we got some sweet coverage and the cat was out of the bag, sooo...
I'm Tony, nice to meet y'all. Descender is my fake internet alias.ย
Feel free to reach out for any help with music production, cassette design, TTRPG projects, tome ruminations, etc. If you see FAM out in the wild, it's more than likely going to be me there. So come say hi! I try to hit (most of) the big DS festivals in one way or another.
Thank you for supporting cult art and music.
